  1. NAME
TRADITIONAL DWELLINGS AND SETTLEMENTS REVIEW (TDSR)
  2. History
TDSR was established and first published in 1989 following the First International Symposium on Traditional Dwellings and Settlements held at Berkeley in 1988.  TDSR was initially funded by grants from the Graham Foundation, the Getty Publication Program, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the University of California at Berkeley.
  3. MISSION
Traditional Dwellings and Settlements Review (TDSR) is a publication of the International Association for the Study of Traditional Environments (IASTE).  As a semi-annual refereed journal, TDSR acts as a forum for the exchange of ideas and a means to disseminate information and report on research activities.   TDSR provides an interdisciplinary forum where scholars from various disciplines and countries can exchange ideas, discuss methods and approaches, and share ?ndings.  As opposed to disciplinary journals, TDSR is concerned with the comparative and cross-cultural understanding of traditional habitat as an expression of informal cultural conventions.  TDSR serves as an umbrella for scholars studying vernacular, indigenous, folk, popular, spontaneous and traditional built environments.

Regarding its focus on the built environment, TDSR adopts IASTE’s definition that tradition should not be viewed or studied as a static legacy of a past, but as a dynamic contemporary, and often political, project that engages with the reinterpretation of the past in the service of the present in light of current conditions and needs.  Contributors to the journal may view traditions that produce the built environment as practices, procedures, and policies which value the past for its assumed authenticity, yet at the same time they are conscious and encouraged to take account of the limitations imposed by traditions, including the denial of choice or the prospects of radical change by and/or for specific individuals, groups, and communities.
  4. PUBLISHING SCHEDULE
TDSR is semi-annual journal published in June and December of every year.
